excerpts

밤시각 Night Vision is a meditation on shamanism, diaspora and the borders of body and state. In South Korea I traveled to the matriarchal island of Jeju and the Demilitarized Zone following two transgressions spanning a century: my great-grandmother, who lived as a shaman under the Japanese Occupation; and my uncle, who drove his motorcycle across the 38th parallel to North Korea in the 1990s. Following reports that endangered tigers (a shaman spirit god) may live in the preserved ecosystem of the DMZ, I performed the animals’ gestures at the border. Filming with an infrared night camera, a glitch appeared in my footage repeating past scenes over the present, figures seaming, doubling, flight. It transposed me as a tiger across the most guarded military landscape in the world.
